Journey of Festival Lestari

2018 - 2023

Festival Lestari, formerly known as Festival Kabupaten Lestari, has now evolved into a cross-sectoral meeting space to promote sustainable development with a focus on local wisdom. Over the course of five festival editions in eight years since the establishment of LTKL, various approaches to environmental preservation and community welfare have been pursued and continue to be actively worked on. With the spirit of collaboration and the joy of the festival, every element is encouraged to actively participate in creating sustainable solutions.

The first Festival Kabupaten Lestari was held in Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra, on July 24, 2018. Carrying the theme #IndonesiaInnovate: Local Solutions by the Nation’s People for Sustainable Regencies, this festival showcased various innovations focusing on people centered economies and data governance to support the vision of sustainable regencies.

The second Festival Kabupaten Lestari took place in Siak Regency, Riau, on October 10–13, 2019, under the theme “Besamo Membelo Siak Towards a Green Indonesia.” The festival introduced the Siak Hijau vision through a range of sustainable innovations focused on restoration and conservation, land intensification, and disaster mitigation related to land management. In addition, it offered educational journeys to Zamrud National Park and Bunga Raya agro-tourism. This marked the beginning of the Telusur Telusur program, which has since become a signature element enriching the festival’s offerings.

The third Festival Kabupaten Lestari was held in Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, on November 2–4, 2020, under the theme “Open Hearts for a Sustainable Economy.” Presented in a hybrid format as an innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival introduced several pre-event programs, including inviting culinary sector partners to explore Sintang’s local cuisine through the Sustainable Culinary Journey. During the festival, Sintang jurisdiction profile was launched, presenting information on Sintang’s collaborative progress toward sustainable development. The event also featured a series of webinars and interactive virtual tours. Singer Andien Aisyah enlivened the celebration by performing her songs while adorned in Sintang woven fabric dyed with natural colors.

The fourth Festival Kabupaten Lestari was held from November 23–28 in two regencies simultaneously: Gorontalo Regency and Bone Bolango Regency. Carrying the theme “Weaving Back a Sustainable Identity,” the festival strengthened collaboration among diverse stakeholders to make local wisdom the foundation for environmentally and socially friendly development. A variety of engaging sessions were featured, including Obrolan Lestari, Temu Inovasi Lestari, Telusur Telusur, and the Pasar Warga, which showcased curated sustainable local products and local food. Festival Kabupaten Lestari also served as a platform to discover solutions to the challenges faced by the host regencies.

In its fifth edition, Festival Kabupaten Lestari transformed into Festival Lestari to embrace broader collaborations. Festival Lestari was held on June 23–25, 2023, in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, carrying the theme “Growing Better.” One of the festival’s main programs was the Nature-Based Innovation Business and Investment Forum. This forum, the first of its kind in Indonesia, focused on nature-based green investment and restorative economy in the Lore Lindu Biosphere Reserve area. Five priority schemes were highlighted, including agroforestry, ecotourism, and the downstream processing of natural products.
